Our story begins at the intersection of Wall Street and Main Street in the picturesque Schoharie Valley town of Cobleskill, New York. It was here that a thirteen-year-old Thomas O. Putnam began each day with a cover-to-cover reading of The Wall Street Journal as he worked shining shoes while forming the dream and strong work ethic that he’d carry with him the rest of his life. Years later in 1974, after the Putnams astutely sold their successful textile business, Fenimore Fabrics, Tom founded Fenimore Asset Management, the investment advisor to FAM Funds, as a means to manage family money. The family based their investment philosophy on finding companies exhibiting the same quality characteristics that they used to run a top-notch business.
Fenimore’s purpose is to preserve our investors’ capital and grow it intelligently over the long term. We were established on the foundation of applying our enduring principles to the process of investing and serving our investors with excellence while always acting in their best interests. Our tradition of excellence continues today as an independent, employee-owned organization whose professionals are accessible and transparent to shareholders.
